Comedian Bill Burr is known for speaking his mind, regardless of political correctness, but critics say he went too far in discussing Caitlyn Jenner's transition this week during an appearance on “Conan.”
Burr said Jenner's transition was “a national news story at a ridiculous level” given that there are “baby seals washing up on the beach because there's no fish left”:
“So Bruce, can your Olympic back handle a D-cup or are you gonna go with something a little more perky?” Burr said, mocking the news coverage. “I'm not being a jerk. I'm not saying that in any bad way, I'm just saying, I miss that guy, I miss him already. He should have told us. He should have given us a chance to say goodbye.”
Burr added that while Jenner's transition was a shock, people couldn't properly react:
“You couldn't on any level be like, ‘Oh my God, what the eff?' You couldn't say that, or you're automatically homophobic. …
“God bless him,” Burr said of Jenner. “God bless her. They really freak out about the pronouns, too.”
Although Burr is getting slammed for his remarks on Twitter, 81 percent of respondents to a Huffington Post poll say he didn't go too far.
And it's hardly the first time Burr has risked offending the trans community. In his recent special, “I'm Sorry You Feel That Way,” Burr took on the subject of transgender athletes, suggesting it's unfair for trans women to compete in women's sports. Burr said a trans woman competing in Mixed Martial Arts would amount to “a dickless dude beating the shit out of a woman” who “might as well hit her with his discarded dick like a flashlight.”
Nevertheless, it may not be much use to try to change Burr. He's also previously mocked organizations like GLAAD.
