A new video posted yesterday asks men from ages 5 to 50 to word associate and share what they think of when they hear, “Be a man.”
The responses cover a broad spectrum, with several respondents saying that the phrase comes off as “sexist”, an “insult” or “derogatory”. For others it's an imperative to “act tough”, be “strong”, and for still more it's “misleading” and “one-dimensional.”
Said Cory, 35, “There's no real definition of what that is to be a man, but there's an assumption when someone says it, like that that there is a very clear definition of what men should be.”
John, 39, added, “Who divines what a man is? I mean we all have to walk our own path. What I consider to make me a man may not make you a man.”

Cut's previous video, released just four days after SCOTUS' gay marriage ruling, had a group of men aged 10-50 (many of them also featured in their latest video) word associate with the word “gay”. While some of the younger men responded with “weird” and “it's a choice”, by and large the most popular associations were “happy” and “equality.”
Cory had another eloquent response, saying, “Misrepresented–people think homosexuality is all about sexuality–isn't.”
