Say what you will about Jaime Dornan's upcoming 50 Shades of Grey, but the erotically-charged film is already proving itself to be a box office powerhouse. According to Fandango Grey has accounted for nearly 60 percent of its ticket sales this week, and has become its fastest selling R-rated film to date. Though the film doesn't hit U.S. theaters until Thursday, tickets for opening day shows are selling out at record speed in a number of southern states that all have something in common.
Mississippi, Arkansas, and West Virginia saw the sharpest uptick of pre-release ticket sales followed closely by Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Tennessee. It's interesting to point out that the bulk of that list, save for Iowa and West Virginia, includes many of the remaining holdout states that have yet to legalize gay marriage. That being said, it isn't exactly surprising considering some of the insight we have about the personal tastes of people hailing from the most conservative states.
Fifty Shades of Grey hits theaters this Thursday evening. Check out a trailer for the film AFTER THE JUMP…
