The Human Rights Campaign has recognized Towleroad as a major presence in the progressive blogging community and submitted an ad urging us all to speak out against the Federal Marriage Amendment. (The ad should appear off to the right.) HRC's website has more detailed information on what we can do to speak out. It seems the most effective tool is a direct call to your local senator. West Hollywood residents can make themselves heard at an Anti Federal Marriage Amendment Vigil which will take place this Monday July 12th, at 7 PM on the southeast corner of Santa Monica and San Vicente Boulevards.
As someone who has been in a monogamous relationship for two years. I eagerly await the day when we are granted full marriage rights. Two years ago, as my father fought a loosing battle against brain cancer, I watched in awe as my mother made the incredibly difficult choices required of her as a spouse. It infuriates me that Brian and I do not have the legal protections that would allow us to make those choices for one another should tragedy strike.
However, I strongly believe that regardless of the choices we make in our intimate relationships, and regardless of whether or not we view marriage as a heterosexual instiutution that has no place in the lives of gay men, what is truly at issue here is an amendment to the United States Constiution which will serve as a permanent stamp of second class citizenship on the lives of gay men and lesbians.
